As we edge closer to the Summer season if we can call it that (in London anyway!), we have been lifting our mood in the office with various mixes and none moreso than our latest CINEMATICPOD, which we thought was about time we shared with you! Our latest episode comes courtesy of the talented Monty Luke!

Monty’s musical soundscape is reflected in our latest mix, which comes as no surprise having being born in Brooklyn, taking in the West Coast en route to Detroit where he now manages Carl Craigs “Planet E” as well as kick starting his own label “Black Catalogue”.

No stranger in the studio Monty’s output has graced labels such as Imperial Dub, Mothership, Planet E as well as his forthcoming release for “Full Flavour” entitled “Bomb On Bomb EP” due to drop end of May.

Following on from the ‘North London Cutz Remixes’ 12” back in March, label head Soy Mustafa steps ups for Cinematic Recordings 3rd release this year.

Recorded in the imprint’s North London studio, ‘Bipolars Revenge’ fuses digital programming with an array of analogue and wave synth gear including a Kurzweil K2500 run through Moog Prodigy filters. The finished result is a futuristic cut of deep techno that contrasts looming chords against a grid of steadily stacking percussion.

For his last EP (Return Of The Anunnaki), Soy secured high profile remixes from John Tejada and Brendan Gregoriy under his Chymera moniker. This time, two equally revered veterans have been recruited: British techno pioneer Kirk Degiorgio gives the title track a tonal overhaul that boasts horizon-spanning depth, while over on the flip, Kirk’s Ubiquity Records labelmate John Beltran condenses the parameters of the original to deliver a tighter coiled interpretation.

The second release for 2012 is something that has been a long time in the making, and we are proud to unleash Alex Celler’s staple release for the label “North London Cutz” with a heavy selection of remixes for 2012 courtesy of Martinez, Kabale und Liebe and Soy Mustafa.
The original tracks “Bellawatt” and “Route 277” were on heavy rotation through the Summer of 2009 and beyond that found their way into the sets of Marco Carola, Josh Wink, Lauhaus, Nick Curly, DJ Sneak and Dyed Soundorom to name a few.
Now injecting a new lease of life Kabale und Liebe of Area Remote and Soweso fame tackles the main track in “Bellawatt” stripping down the original and giving it more swing. His modern approach with non-formulaic percussion and subtle transitions full of groove gives Kabale’s version a proper House workout that’s totally nuskool!
The sleeper track on the original EP “Supranaturale” was the preferred choice by label head Soy Mustafa. Soy’s reconstruction of the original track lent itself to a deeper organic and minimal approach with a deep undertone and a hypnotic groove extenuated with building chords and the hypnotic chant in the background. The track builds with pounding kicks and a teasing vocal snippet “Till I die” until it breaks down to the haunting melody only for the drums to kick back in for that heads down moment!
Martinez over the past few years has been relentless working floors and slating releases on Moon Harbour and Love Letters from Oslo making him an in demand producer and remixer so who better to take on the classic “Route 277”. With over 10 mins of drums and almost percussive madness, Martinez takes on the tribal groove that’s constantly evolving with only a dance floor in mind!

Erwin van Moll has been taking piano lessons now for almost four years. “It was about time” he says. “Standing still means the same as going backwards”. And he is someone who’s always looking ahead. He was one of the first Dutch techno musicians during the early nineties and one of the main producers to give birth to the ‘Eindhoven techno sound’.

As we move into a busy period at Cinematic Label’s HQ, we have had one mix on repeat bar none before publishing and that’s from one of Detroits finest exports, Rolando Rocha aka DJ Rolando!
Rolando now residing in Edinburgh one of the most desirable towns in the UK, is a far cry from the raw urban surroundings in Detroit were he gave birth to the “Aztec Mystic” and “Knights Of The Jaguar” on the militant UR record label. Its noteworthy that since and never before UR set a precedent with its cult following to protect their heritage from the ensuing battle with Sony.
Rolando more than ever has gained plaudits for his style of melodic techno thats spiritual as it is relentless, entering into a new phase with his project “Crossroads” seeing him celebrate almost 20 years behind the wheels of steel. Rolando we are blessed!!

Reggie Dokes – Child Of The Sun EP [PREVIEW] by cinematiclabel

Kick starting the new year, Cinematic’s latest release comes from label debutant Reggie Dokes in the form of “Child of The Sun EP”. An inspired artist hailing from Detroit, Reggie spoils us with three funk fuelled cuts via the motor city!

An inspired artist through his association with Derrick May and Transmat, Reggie is one of the unsung heroes from Detroit who’s sole purpose has always been to concentrate on the music. His Psychotasia record label has been an outlet for releasing his signature sound of soul inspired deep house and techno that has gained him plaudits all over Europe. Recent guest appearances have seen Reggie release on esteemed labels such as Royal Oak, Kuumba and We Play House.

The first track “Child of the sun” is a Detroit deep house burner fuelled with funk and electronic rhythms that builds, envoking vibrancy and colour before the bassline sets the tone in pummelling throughout the track.

The second track aptly titled “Funk Below” further signifies Reggies versatility this time with a deeper mindset giving us the feeling of intimate night spots that are smoke filled with llow ceilings. Think browns and deep reds when listening to this and funk below that radar.

Make Believe compliments the release thats a little leftfield but not to be ignored. Synth laden and downtempo, the hi hats whip away providing energy climaxing with clever arrangement of strings before the whole thing gets stripped down for a more heads down moment.

CINEMATICPOD 004 – KIRK DEGIORGIO by cinematiclabel

The next CINEMATICPOD comes from one of the UK’s finest exports in Electronic music, as we welcome Kirk Degiorgio!

Kirk’s career spans almost 20 years with a variety of personas whether it be As One, Elegy, Esoterik, Critical Phase, and Future/Past as recording aliases. Founding the ART label (Applied Rythmic Technology) in 1991, Kirk helped forge early relationships with now staples of the original Electronic scene with the likes of The Black Dog, Aphex Twin, B12 and Carl Craig.

Degiorgio went on to record material for ART, Planet E and R&S before signing As One to New Electronica for the albums Reflections and Celestial Soul, which both made the Muzik Top 30 albums for 1994/5. Further albums for Clear (UK), Mo Wax, Ubiquity, Versatile and Neroli cemented Kirk’s reputation as a seriously heavyweight producer with a unique, individual sound, beautifully combining elements of jazz, soul, techno and funk into electronic tracks.

The mix aptly titled “Chicago 85” pays tribute to the early warehouse days, where the term “House” was still in its infancy, and Kirks mix closes our year with some nostalgia….turn up the bassbins, hit download and enjoy!!!!

Cinematic label boss Soy Mustafa is currently in the studio working on a collaborative project with Chicago legend Chez Damier. Looking forward to 2012 Soy enthuses at whats on offer “Chez is a legend and the prospect of working with him is something that I’m realy looking forward to.” With a discography that stretches back as far as the big bang, Chez’ has always maintained his integrity in producing and often siting to be “an inspired artist” After a recent skype conversation, Chez was excited at the prospect of an “Anglo Turkish – American” collaboration”…….the melting pot is hot,watch this space!
