Florian Muller – You EP
A1. You (Reference Remix)
A2. You
B1. Mobius Dub
B2. Mobius Dub (Hieroglyphic Being Re-Source Cue Version)
Cat No – CINMV12002
Release Date : 21.05.2013 / 12″ Vinyl

After a busy year of five releases in 2012, Cinematic is already back to it in 2013 with the fourth release by label debutant Florian Muller. Alongside the burgeoning Frenchmans original contributions sit some heavyweight remixes, namely from wildly idiosyncratic Mathematics label boss Hieroglyphic Being and Reference, aka Detroit dub-smith Luke Hess and Brian Kage. Mullers first contribution You demonstrates a predilection for dubby deepness and polished production.
Infectious claps and almost subliminal kicks power along the groove as ambient synth soundscapes drift above and a lone cry of You injects some very real emotion. The remix from Reference kicks much harder and faster, as you might expect, but is just as doused in dub richness. This time the synths are sharper and louder in the mix as tumultuous percussion grows in stature. A lush and classicist string breakdown is dramatic and epic in all the right ways and simply screams to be played loud.
Mullers other contribution is Mobius Dub, a deep and dark experimental track that buries synthetic sounds, marching drums and the sound of a discordant orchestra well down below the surface. Paranoid and gnarly, the choice of remixer in Hieroglyphic Being couldnt be more apt. The Chicagoan injects yet more nervy and obscured instrumental squiggles into the heart of the track and allows the pulsing kicks to roam free below. Its occult and mysterious like all the mans music and closes out a diverse EP.

Coming to prominence in ’96 via the legendary Ata Tak imprint, Matt Flores has spent the last 15 years steadily establishing himself as something of a producer’s producer amongst the international tech-house fraternity. Now after almost 100 releases under a variety of monikers including Mighty Flores and to a lesser extent My-T, the German makes his debut on Cinematic Recordings.

Having released the ‘Waveform’ EP via Cinematic’s sister channel, Shack Music in ’07, the Düsseldorf-based veteran delivers a 4 track EP in conjunction with the Dortmund-based sound designer and harpist, Meike Rath.

Comprised of 2 brand new solo cuts, the A-side features a hypnotic yet grooving slab of peak-time house entitled ‘Dub In The Red’, while ‘Enchanted’ is a far more reflective production that melodically chugs through a magnitude of cavernous depth.

Over on the flipside, Matt and Meike follow on from a series of live collaborations together and once again pool resources. With both tracks steeped in an organic and almost pastoral elegance, ‘The Fall’ contrasts stacking percussion with a melancholic piano progression, before the EP’s emotive title track ‘Richter Method’ completes the package in wash of almost-Voigt-esque ambience and meticulously orchestrated instrumentation.

The ever cultured house and techno outpost that is the Cinematic Label here serves up another tasty EP, this time from Belgium house and techno stalwart Klaina. Through a number of EPs and a full length, as well as his own radio show and parties in and around Belgium, Klaina has earned himself a reputation as someone who crafts sci-fi influenced, heavy linear sounds, and his ‘Semiplan’ track, along with remixes from The Rhythm Odyssey, JuJu & jordash, Amir Alexander, is no different.

The six-minute work is thick with otherworldly atmosphere as the sounds of hovering space ships encircle a stiff snare pattern and scattered kicks and toms. It’s evocative and loopy techno that hypnotises you through repetition and stands out for its crystal clear production and ravey little chord stabs.

Opening the great selection of remixes is Golf Channel Recordings’ The Rhythm Odyssey. He strips the track back to something more in line with deep house, though allows the spiralling sci-fi sounds to remain. A more rasping and rubber bassline is injected into the mix to add a little more dynamism, and the whole thing sounds like something Vakula might well have made.

Next up, Dekmankle’s JuJu & Jordash go even deeper with their remix, layering in plenty of analogue basslines that weave and wave up and down to bring a sense of liquidness to the whole outer-space arrangement. Pianos lurk in the background and keep you on edge, pulling you deeper and deeper into the fold with each little ripple.

Finally, Chicago’s Amir Alexander – a deep house producer with a keen ear for great synths on labels like Plan Be and Argot – does his thing to close out the EP: he strips it back to a mysterious 4/4 beat and injects rasping analogue notes, watery synths and itchy little hi-hats to keep things move forward. It sounds like a distant metropolis looks, frankly, as is as stimulating for the mind as it is the heel. Cinematic by name, Cinematic by nature – this is another special release from one of UK’s finest modern imprints.

Our next episode comes via our first live recording from Japan, this time with Fumihiro and Tadac.
Fumihiro Hoshi & Tadac are a new production duo based in Tokyo. They met at Denki Rock Festival on a tropical island south of Japan, soon hitting it off and realising they shared a common musical interest. As such, the more established of the two, Fumihiro Hoshi (who had already released on labels like Plus Records, NB Records and Totem Traxx) invited Tadac to join his Digital Sound Unit, Mhonoral. Accepting at once, the pair has now gone on to perform live sets at a number of top clubs including Womb, Air, Eleven and a number of beach raves.

Inspired by the likes of Joris Voorn, Pig & Dan and Josh Wink, the duo have now gotten together in the studio to work on their own brand of serene house and techno. Classically clean lines, plenty of mysterious mood and excellent production characterise the pair’s full formed sound, and the latest results will soon be released on the ever classy Cinematic label in late 2012, surely turning some much deserved attention onto this fast rising duo.
